There’s nothing quite like the scent of a fresh Christmas tree to kick off the holiday season. And the fresher the tree at purchase, the longer it will last. We work hard to source high-quality, freshly cut trees so you can enjoy yours throughout the season.

If you’ve just brought home a pre-cut tree from our Garden Center in Woodstock, a little care will go a long way toward keeping it looking fresh into the New Year.

Start with a Fresh Cut
Even though your tree was recently harvested, it begins to seal over at the base once it’s cut. Before placing it in your stand, trim about half an inch off the bottom of the trunk. This reopens the pores so the tree can absorb water effectively.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Water is the single most important factor to a long-lasting tree. Place it in a sturdy stand that holds at least a gallon of water and fill it immediately. We recommend using warm water for your first watering as this will help dissolve any sap on the bottom of the tree. In the first 24 to 48 hours, your tree may take up more water than expected, so check often. After that, be sure the water level never drops below the base of the trunk. Plain water works perfectly; no preservatives needed.

Pick the Right Spot
To slow drying, keep your tree away from heat sources such as woodstoves, radiators, and sunny south-facing windows. A cooler corner of the room is ideal. LED lights are a smart choice because they produce very little heat and are gentler on your tree’s needles. If you notice branches drying more quickly than expected, a humidifier can add a little moisture back into the air—especially helpful in Vermont’s wood-heated homes.

Recycle Your Tree and Support Local Scouts
When the season winds down, you can give your tree a second purpose. Christmas Tree Recycling will take place on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m. at Chippers, 1238 Pomfret Road in Pomfret. The Woodstock Scouts BSA troops will recycle your bare tree for a donation, supporting troop activities and helping members attend the National Scouting Jamboree in 2026.
