Lisa's Thoughts on Cheese:

Halloumi or Haloumi…stellar no matter how you spell it

With grilling season here, it’s time to re-introduce Halloumi cheese, a traditional cheese from Cyprus. Halloumi is produced by first heating the cheese curds prior to pressing which practically speaking, produces a cheese with a high melting point.

Halloumi is semi-firm cheese similar in texture to Mozzarella, with a taste reminiscent of Feta. It is often lightly flavored with mint to add to the taste. Traditionally, Halloumi was wrapped in mint leaves to keep it fresh and ended up with some of the mint flavor. Hence, if you look closely, many packaged Halloumi will have bits of mint leaf on the surface of the cheese.

Easily cut into neat rectangles or cubes, Halloumi may be placed in a lightly oiled frying pan and fried until golden or grilled on a gas or charcoal BBQ grill. Crispy golden on the outside with a soft center, Halloumi is a cheese which compliments a variety of flavors. Try it with grilled vegetables or cubed and grilled on skewers with tomatoes.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THE FARMERS' MARKET??

We are a unique fresh food market, OPEN ALL YEAR, located one mile west of the historic village of Woodstock. Here at WFM, our entire staff is relentless in the pursuit of great service, value and quality. Plus, WE LOVE FOOD! Our mission is to focus on artisan food and products; we believe that small batch food produced both locally and globally often tastes better and helps support local economies both here in Vermont and around the world.

Woodstock Farmers' MarketWe also pride ourselves on our work place and atmosphere...just one step in our front door and you'll feel it for yourself...the music is cranking, the produce is piled high, the cases are full of great food, the store is clean and, most importantly, we are happy and ready to serve you.

Nothing has really changed since our start in 1992, except the size of our building and staff. Now at 30 to 40 part and full time staffers, we are local food junkies who serve our community award winning food: our prepared foods and deli department serve outstanding breakfast, lunch, fabulous sandwiches, deli salads as well as hot entrees for dinner; our deli serves incredible local and world famous farmhouse cheeses, olives, sliced meats and other gourmet provisions, plus plenty of strong coffee and espresso beverages.

Our seafood and meat departments in our deli are the place to find the freshest seafood north of Boston and the best hand cut meats and all natural poultry in the Upper Valley. We also search for local or all natural meat suppliers whenever possible.

Our produce department serves the absolute freshest conventional, organic and local produce available while our garden center is home to zone hardy locally grown perennials and unique annuals including plenty of local pumpkins mums in the fall and holiday greenery and Christmas trees in the late fall.

And our grocery department keeps a wide array of specialty and everyday groceries on our shelves and speeds our guests through our checkout with the latest technology and pleasant, speedy service. We specialize in hard to find unique food products like olive oils, marinades, chocolates and jams from Vermont and the world all over. And we ship most of our food stuffs all over the world.

And our latest venture is the virtual world of shopping, WoodstockFarmersMarket.com, where we hope to duplicate our great service and great food on the world-wide web.
